About the role
Energy CX is hiring a Director of Compliance to build out the company's compliance function. This role sits on the Strategy & Operations team — a high-visibility, high-output group that manages company-wide reporting, projects, and processes. It's not a role that executes an existing playbook — it's a senior, high-visibility hire who will design and stand up the systems, policy, and infrastructure Energy CX needs as a multi-state regulated business, hold signing authority on behalf of the company, and partner with outside General Counsel as a peer on regulatory substance.
We're seeking a detail-oriented, self-directed professional who has personally built or been a key architect of a compliance function before — ideally at a startup or on a small team — and thrives operating with real autonomy: deciding what the function needs, exercising independent judgment on when to act versus escalate to counsel, and holding signing authority to bind the company on contracts within counsel-set parameters. About a third of the role is hands-on contract execution (NDAs, MSAs, RFPs, vendor agreements); the majority is building the internal system of record, signing-authority policy, escalation matrix, training programs, and compliance infrastructure that doesn't exist at Energy CX today. If you excel at organization, contract governance, operating with autonomy, and enjoy designing and building systems from scratch, this is the role for you.
Responsibilities
Design and stand up ECX's internal compliance function, including a system of record, escalation matrix, signing-authority policy, and other core systems that create a strong compliance foundation as we scale
Hold signing authority and exercise independent judgment on contract execution and regulatory matters, partnering with outside General Counsel as a peer
Own regulatory and licensing oversight across multiple states, coordinating with outside counsel on entity formation, registered-agent, and PUC licensing
Build a compliance program that supports execution across initiatives like international growth, internal policy documentation, and employee compliance trainings
Review, redline, and manage NDAs, MSAs, RFPs, and vendor agreements within SLAs
Translate outside counsel and regulatory guidance into internal policy and process
Build and maintain the compliance system of record, SOPs, and escalation matrix
Complete industry-required regulatory filings (e.g., State level PUCs)
Coordinate with outside counsel and licensing partners on multi-state filings, renewals, and deadlines
Build and maintain compliance training (LMS) and required policy documentation
Maintain sales-facing guardrail policy for cross-border expansion questions
Partner cross-functionally on compliance-related special projectsWhat we’re looking for

Skilled at translating legal/regulatory guidance into operational policy; able to partner with outside/General Counsel as a peer
Highly organized and self-directed, with a track record of operating autonomously in a fast-paced environment
Preferred:
Background at a startup or smaller company building compliance infrastructure
Experience in energy, utilities, insurance, or another multi-state regulated industry
Experience building a training program (LMS) or policy documentation from scratch
Proficient in Excel, Microsoft Suite, and Notion
